Hello Sailor Commission
In the summer of 2025, I collaborated with artist Ethan Pennell, AKA the Crowman, to paint five Atlas Balls to look like planets for a commission by Jeremy Deller and The Box as part of The Triumph of Art celebration across the UK.
The atlas balls were made of a mix of concrete and stones of varying weights. They were too heavy for us to lift to work on them, so we had to work on the floor and rotate them to achieve the desired results
Ethan and I worked as a team on each of the objects. Problem solving how to maintain the paint work when the body builders were dropping the balls to the floor and for transportation.
Planet earth was the most complicated piece as we wanted to ensure we had included a reasonably accurate depiction of all of the continents. To do this we used a transfer method to map out for ourselves the outline of the land
Once we had completed the work they were transported to Plymouth Lido for the event where the strong men and women lifted them for the audience to see
